As an urban landscape painter fascinated with city activity and vitality, there is no greater inspiration than Tokyo, the largest city in the world. Its dense population and constant stimuli make the city ideal for studying the idea of time’s effect on a large physical space and its residents.I am traveling to Tokyo for the month of June on the Scholars and Artists Grant from the College of Saint Rose, where I am currently a professor of painting and drawing. During my time in Tokyo, I will create a series of paintings and drawings that reflect both my fascination with urban landscapes and the work done by two Japanese artists: Ando Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo (Tokyo) and Katsushika Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mt. Fuji. Two weeks from today, I arrive at NRT airport in Tokyo.
